I don't know what to call it, veneer I guess, that makes it look like cork. So faux cork. I wouldn't have known this (but would have wondered why the shoes were not as comfortable as other cork soled shoes), but--this faux cork scratches off very easily leaving a very obvious white in it's place. The shoes I ordered came with a bit of the veneer already scratched off.
In other ways they seem to be well made. It is a pity they scrimped here.
