The bottom of the shoe is a little contoured to protect toes I would guess (it's slightly contoured upward so as if the foot sits in a slight bowl shape)...which is great for little ones. Really happy with this purchase! They have a nice "Reef" label on the strap too. Colors are great which shows around the foot slightly. They seem true to size. We got a size 9/10 which works great, and he's probably a size 10...so I'd say go down if you're between sizes so that the straps won't come off when walking.
